Our History
In 1987, a faithful group of sixteen brothers and sisters initiated our congregation under the leadership of Brother Curtis Coleman, Sr. The group included Brother Horace Hall, Sr., and family; Brother and Sister Herbert Bryant; Brother and Sister Henry Lynah; Sister Louise Duncan; Sister Muriel Del Santos; Sister Frances Bright Johnson; Sister Angela Buchanan; and Sister Susie Banks, to name a few.
Worship services were held in the chapel of Sexton Hall Mortuary. As the congregation grew, we met at other locations such as Forsyth Park, the EOA building, Quality Inn, and a local union building supplied by Francis Bright Johnson located at Stones and Winnett. Brother Coleman kept the congregation together until his departure. Brothers Herbert Bryant, Sr., and Horace Hall, Sr. preached for us until they commissioned Brother Jessie Drayton to preach. He led our congregation for two weeks and was asked to be the minister. Brother Drayton led services at the chapel of Sexton Hall Mortuary for four months.
He encouraged our congregation to purchase a building to worship in. Brother Horace Hall, Sr., assisted us in purchasing a building located at 1601 Abercorn St. The congregation became known as the Midtown Church of Christ. Afterward, Brother Drayton was called to spread the gospel elsewhere. In the interim, Brother Bryant preached for us.
The 50th Street Church of Christ has been heavily involved with community benevolence. The distribution of hygienical supplies, distributing clothing, including coats, t- shirts, socks, underwear and winter coats for the homeless. Also nursing home visitations have been a part of our regular benevolent and humanitarian activity. We regularly distribute Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets each year. 50th Street Church of Christ also has also provided hurricane relief to churches in the Caribbean Islands.
Our Mission
At Fiftieth Street Church of Christ, our mission is to glorify God through worship, service, and fellowship. We strive to create a welcoming environment where everyone can grow spiritually and find support in their faith journey.
In the summer of 1991, Brother Lynah contacted Brother Linnie L. Darden., III, the young minister who preached and evangelized in the Sylvania, Metter and Statesboro area. Brother Darden accepted the offer to preach as interim minister for the Midtown Church of Christ. In time our love grew for Brother Darden and his young family. The congregation asked him to be our minister and he accepted the challenge. Soon after, his ministry grew to include three assistant ministers, Brothers Anthony Bryant, Cordell Hall, Jack White, Jr., and Marvin Johnson as Youth Minister.
In 2000, the rapid growth of our congregation led the church to relocate to our present location at 732 East 50th Street in the prestigious Ardsley Park neighborhood. Now called Fiftieth Street Church of Christ, the congregation has experienced unprecedented spiritual growth since the earlier days. We have baptized more than 300 souls since 1991. Brother Darden’s soul-stirring messages of repentance and faith toward God give Fiftieth Street Church of Christ a reputation for pure and unadulterated gospel teaching and preaching.
